Domestic Violence


Definition/Types 

Violence is any pattern of coercive tactics, which can include physical, psychological, sexual, economic and emotional abuse, perpetrated by an intimate or family member, with the goal of establishing or maintaining power and control over the victim. No one is immune from domestic violence – it affects individuals and families regardless of ethnicity, age, race, culture, economic status or religion. Types of domestic violence include physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, economic abuse, verbal abuse, control and isolation.

Know the Warning Signs of Domestic Violence:  

Does your partner:

§ Keep track of your schedule and whereabouts?

§ Control you by being very bossy or demanding?

§ Accuse you of flirting or cheating?

§ Constantly criticize you?

§ Discourage your relationships with family and friends?

§ Control all the money?

§ Humiliate you in front of others?

§ Threaten to hurt you, your children, or your pets?

§ Prevent you from working or attending school?

§ Force you to have sex against your will?

§ Push, hit, slap, punch, kick, or bite you or your children?

§ Intentionally or repeatedly follow or harass you?
