Child Abuse and Adoption
The National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (NCANDS) reported an estimated 1,770 child fatalities in 2009.
According to the Child Welfare League of America (www.cwla.org), an association of nearly 800 public and private nonprofit agencies, many experts believe the number of abuse- and neglect-related deaths may be much higher than the official figures.
Over 3 million reports of child abuse are made every year in the United States; however, those reports can include multiple children. In 2009, approximately 3.3 million child abuse reports and allegations were made involving an estimated 6 million children.
